Lately any Twitter searches for “Toronto Pizza” are consumed by The Mad Italians new Zazzu Cones. For that reason alone I needed to give it a try. So this Saturday after a good sleep in the pooch, the lady and I all put on our jackets and walked down around College and Grace for pizza in a cone. I was expecting a gimmick. And frankly, I got a gimmick. But you know... it was pretty good too!
The cones are pre-made and kept in a fridge below the assembly area. The cone is then stuffed with your choice of toppings (I got the pepperoni and Carrie got the meatball) and then topped with cheese. From there it is placed in the special oven where it spends a few minutes baking before coming out the other side. After getting our cones we found a bench nearby to enjoy what we assumed would be a similar experience to a McCain pizza pocket. We were pleasantly surprised that it was actually pretty good. The dough is quite dense and crispy as I’m sure it has to be to stay so perfectly in tact until the last bite. The sauce played a similar roll in keeping the thing together. It was very thick and so sat perfectly in the cone not leaking and not sogging up the cone. I was afraid there would only be cheese on top but was happy to find cheese mixed in with the sauce throughout. The addition of fresh basil really made it for me though. It's brightness gave the cone a much more authentic flavour. That being said I could have used more!
I don’t need to go too in depth with this one. It is what it is. It’s a gimmicky pizza in a cone. But a pretty tasty gimmick. For that I say it’s worth a shot if you’re in the area.
