King Slice

Last week the girlfriend and I got home a little late and got ourselves into a little too much wine.  By the time we realized how deep we were into our adult beverages it was too late and we were too tired and sauced to make any dinner.  For once it was her and not I suggesting ordering in a pie.  I decided I needed some new content for the blog and I wasn’t in the mood for chain pizza so we ordered from King Slice.  King Slice is a “Toronto favourite” in the west end near Dundas St. West and Bloor.  I hear people, especially from Bloor West talk about this place all the time.  I’ve had it once but it was too long ago to really remember.  We ordered the pie at about 9:30 pm on a Wednesday.  We didn’t receive said pie until about 10:45 pm.  If this were a Friday or Saturday night, hell, even a Thursday I’d totally understand.  But a Wednesday?  Really?

We ordered the extra large ‘King Slice Special’.  I figured what better pie to review than the pizzerias namesake.  The answer?  I’m sure, ANY other pie.

I’m sure there were several contributing factors including time spent in transit, size of the pie, dense toppings and the dough recipe but this pie was an effing mess.  Check out the pic below for an idea of just how flimsy this piece of… something, really was.

The pie was more of a veggie salad with a layer of thin, soggy dough below it.  There was no eating this with your hands until you made it to the end crust.  The toppings were a soggy mess and there was just too much weight to them to begin with.  The cheese is your standard, processed mozzarella that you get in a shrink wrapped ball at your local grocery store.  The kind of cheese that congeals when it cools so as you bite into the pie you pull off a slices worth of mozzarella.
The dough was boring but eatable.  Decent chew, thin but not too thin.  Wasn’t the worst I’ve had but it could have been better.  Again, I want to blame a lot of the downfalls of this pie on how long it took between coming out of the oven and showing up at my door.  However, if you’re not able to get me a pizza in under an HOUR and a quarter on a Wednesday evening then I’m not sure what that says about your pizzeria.   So for this experience… quite crappy.  I will have to swing by to have a slice or get a sit in pie.  Wouldn’t suggest delivery as what you’ll have by the time it arrives will be something only resembling a good pizza.
